DIY whimsy look for my thrifted winter coat

whimsy decoration for a thrifted winter coat

I love winter coats with a high wool content because they are really warm and durable.

I also don't mind if it's a men's coat that catches my eye. Men's coats are often cheaper and have a less fitted cut than the models in the women's department. Moreover a boxy men's coat offers plenty of room for a warm layered outfit underneath. That's why this dark blue men's coat (my latest flea market find), which I'm going to decorate today, ended up in my wardrobe.

Normally I embellish coats and jackets with pins, brooches, or vintage punk band buttons, but I think this coat deserves a little more. Therefore, I bought a bag of blue buttons and will let my imagination run wild.

Unlike coats with lapel collars, where you can easily modify the collar, this coat has a button closure all the way to the top and therefore only a small collar that I turn up when it's windy. Buttons at this part of the coat would get in the way. So I'll tackle the button placket. It's the most obvious solution, after all.

This is what the result looks like at the moment. I could imagine adding more details, such as small flowers or blue ribbons, but it's cold outside and it's time to break in the coat.
